Being Dravid

Being Dravid Matters…

Firstly, congratulations to all on India’s remarkable T20 World Cup win yesterday. It was an incredible tournament, with a thrilling final game between India and South Africa. The moment the last ball was bowled and India's victory was confirmed, emotions erupted. The tear-streaked faces of Rohit, Virat, Hardik, and Siraj were unforgettable. Celebratory moments like Virat and Rohit hugging, wrapped in the tricolour, and Dravid embracing Hardik and Bumrah, were heartwarming. Yet, the sight of Dravid holding the trophy aloft, his joy uncontainable, was particularly moving. As the chief coach of Team India, he was finally having his moment.

Dravid debuted alongside Saurav Ganguly, sharing his career with greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Virendra Sehwag, Saurav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Anil Kumble. Each of these players gave us unforgettable moments, from Sachin's innings against Australia in Sharjah to Sehwag’s double century against Pakistan. Kumble's ten-wicket haul against Pakistan and Laxman's timeless innings against Australia at Eden Garden are etched in our minds. And when we think of Dravid, we think of two words, ‘Mr Dependable’ and ‘The Wall’!

Dravid is the fourth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket and the first player to score a century in all ten Test-playing countries, as of 2004. He holds the record for the most catches taken by a player (non-wicket-keeper) in Test cricket, and has never been out for a Golden duck in his 286 Test innings. He has faced more balls and spent more time at the crease than any other player in test cricket.

Dravid's career was marked by extraordinary effort. Despite often being overshadowed by his teammates' more glamorous performances, Dravid's contributions were crucial. He was versatile, technically sound, and able to perform under any conditions. He was a team player, excelling at any batting position and even serving as a wicket keeper. His dependability gave the team stability, leading to many Indian victories.

Being Dravid isn't easy. While players like Sachin, Sehwag, Saurav, and Kumble were naturally gifted, Dravid achieved his success through hard work and dedication. His achievements were often overlooked or undervalued, but he never stopped contributing in any way he could. He was 'The Wall,' consistently delivering solid performances.

We all face situations where our efforts and dedication seem underappreciated. It can be disheartening when others achieve more noticeable results or receive more recognition. However, being Dravid is valuable. It brings stability to any group, whether a family, workplace, or social circle. And while not everyone may appreciate your efforts, there will always be those who understand and value your contributions. Being Dravid matters to these people in your life.
